A proteggere gli Elfi di Valinor che abitano la città c'è Ulmo, Signore delle Acque, che invia Tuor, eroe suo malgrado, da re Turgon per metterlo in guardia. A Gondolin Tuor cresce, sposa Idril, figlia del re, e dalla loro unione nasce Eärendel, padre di Elrond di Gran Burrone. Purtroppo, però, le forze del Male riescono a far breccia nel segreto della città elfica e la sottopongono a un epico assedio: Morgoth scatena un immane esercito di orchi, draghi e Balgor che non lascia scampo. Lo stesso Tolkien ha definito La caduta di Gondolin "il primo vero racconto di questo mondo immaginario" e insieme a Beren e Lúthien e a I figli di Húrin è considerata uno dei tre Grandi Racconti e dei Tempi Remoti.

I was delighted when I heard about the release of this book because in Beren and Lúthien Christopher Tolkien erroneously stated that it was going to be the last restoration of his father’s work he undertook.
