Quello di Costantinopoli è stato un caso unico nella storia: mille anni di dominio incontrastato su un impero vastissimo e multietnico. Dal IV secolo fino alla caduta, avvenuta nel 1453 per mano di Maometto II, l'Impero romano d'Oriente è sopravvissuto al gemello d'Occidente, ha retto l'onda d'urto degli Unni, degli Slavi, degli Arabi e degli altri che nei secoli hanno cercato di sfondare il limes. Eppure la forza militare, la posizione e le risorse non erano neppure lontanamente paragonabili a quelle di Roma. Come è stato possibile? Bisanzio elaborò una strategia politica e militare efficacissima, basata su un uso estremamente moderno di quella che oggi chiameremmo "intelligence". La diplomazia dell'Impero romano d'Oriente seppe imbrigliare le forze nemiche raccogliendo dettagliati dossier e riuscendo a ottenere vantaggiose concessioni a tutti i tavoli di trattativa. Sul fronte militare, cercò di conservare la pace il più a lungo possibile: mantenne alta la tensione agendo come se la guerra fosse sempre imminente, ma scese in battaglia solo quando aveva buone possibilità di vittoria. Nella politica interna, privilegiò l'integrazione e l'assorbimento per sfruttare il patrimonio di culture, tecnologie e conoscenze che ogni popolo assoggettato portava in dote. Questo libro è il frutto di quasi trent'anni di ricerche di Edward Luttwak.
