This is one of Winslow's earlier books, and while it is not as good as The Power of the Dog, The Winter of Frankie Machine, Dawn Patrol and some of his other later work, it's still a very good read with well-drawn characters and a great climax. naw, it ain't nearly as good as Power of the Dog, but fuckit, what is? winslow's a goddamn badass (second only to ellroy in contemporary crime) and the russian prison/KGB training sequence is reason enough to read this book... yeah, there's some cliches and a nice helping of cheese, but it's all so
