Venezia, 1945. La Seconda guerra mondiale sta per concludersi, ma la città è ancora occupata e gli italiani temono il potere e i soprusi degli uomini del Terzo Reich. In una splendida notte stellata Cenzo, un pescatore veneziano intento nel suo lavoro, si imbatte nel corpo di una giovane donna che galleggia nelle acque della laguna. Accorgendosi che è ancora viva, Cenzo la trae in salvo sulla sua barca e la porta con sé nel suo capanno di pesca. La ragazza, che si chiama Giulia, è in serio pericolo: nata in una ricchissima famiglia ebrea, è riuscita miracolosamente a sfuggire ai nazisti e ora le SS la stanno cercando. Cenzo decide di nasconderla e proteggerla a qualunque costo, correndo gravi rischi. Questo atto di altruismo proietterà i due protagonisti in una realtà popolata da nemici e imboscate da cui dovranno difendersi per poter sopravvivere. Il mondo dei partigiani, dei fascisti, delle esecuzioni sommarie e del mercato nero fa da sfondo a una storia in cui suspense e amore si mescolano nel ricordo di una pagina della storia italiana mai dimenticata.

I re-read this novel as a book club read ... the beginning is superb: two well-developed characters and a fascinating plot opening. There is reason to expect a wonderful love story set against the end of WWII in Italy. However, after 75 or so pages, the book falls apart. The plot expands to include
