Sinossi
Nello stato di Washington, agli albori del Novecento, William Talmadge conduce una vita in simbiosi con gli alberi del suo frutteto, circondato dai boschi. Segnato dal dolore per la scomparsa misteriosa della sorella, ancora adolescente, Talmadge non si è lasciato indurire dalla solitudine: è rimasto un uomo buono, fedele ai propri affetti e ai propri ricordi. Finché un giorno al mercato, dove è andato a vendere i suoi prodotti, fa un incontro destinato a spezzare la sua tranquillità. Due ragazze giovanissime, dall’aria selvatica, entrambe vistosamente incinte, gli rubano le mele. Qualche giorno dopo si ripresentano al limitare del suo frutteto e a quel punto comincia, da parte di Talmadge, un paziente avvicinamento per vincere la loro diffidenza, offrendo cibo e sostegno. Le ragazze sono impaurite, in fuga da un destino terribile di sfruttamento e violenza, da un uomo che le reclama come una sua proprietà, e che non tarda a riaffacciarsi per presentare il conto. In una storia di grande intensità drammatica, di sopravvivenza e di riscatto, tocca al mite e tenace frutticoltore ergersi a difesa della sua nuova, improbabile famiglia, per garantirle un futuro, per difendere le ragazze e il loro desiderio di libertà: una sfida impossibile, a cui si sottopone con un’ostinazione quasi eroica, forse anche nel tentativo di sciogliere i nodi irrisolti del proprio passato.

Let’s state it up front. This is a GREAT book. Not a pretty good book with some nice qualities, but a powerful, beautiful, thoughtful and incredibly moving work of art that will be read for generations. SPOILER ALERT - This was a slow, luxurious read for the first 200 pages. I was steeped in the landscape, the time period, the characters and enough of a plot to keep me turning the pages. The writing was deceptively simple at times, almost staccato in rhythm, yet highly evocative and well-matched to Leggi tutto
It is a rare read that cuts through the surface noise of daily life and becomes the one sound you can hear clearly, like a church bell on a still winter morning. I'm clearly in the minority here, but I had some major issues with this book. Although the first hundred or so pages were really wonderful, the final 300 pages were relentlessly frustrating, filled with a bunch of slightly boring people not talking to one another and making truly terrible decisions
This is a gorgeous book…powerful, moving and beautifully written with a spare, eloquent writing style similar to Kent Haruf, one of my favorite authors.
