Insolente e provocatorio, scritto in una prosa dalla potenza lirica, "I canti di Maldoror" è un poema dell'inconscio e un'allegoria del Male, un grido di blasfema ribellione contro Dio e la società. Il protagonista, Maldoror, maestro dei travestimenti perseguito dalla polizia poiché ritenuto incarnazione del Male, si fa strada attraverso un mondo sinistro e sadico, popolato da becchini, ermafroditi, prostitute, squali, pazzi e bambini inquietanti. Egli rappresenta l'uomo che si rivolta contro il suo Creatore, uccidendolo e facendolo a pezzi. Delirante, erotico, sacrilego e grandioso al contempo, ignorato dai più alla pubblicazione e criticato per la scrittura esplicita e grottesca, "I canti" fu riscoperto alla fine dell'Ottocento, raggiungendo notevole successo come uno dei primi e più straordinari esempi di scrittura surrealista. È oggi ritenuto fra i testi più interessanti e ricchi di spunti del maledettismo ottocentesco, di quel romanticismo satanico che rivendica all'artista il ruolo di angelo caduto, tanto più emarginato quanto più profondamente consapevole.
