Le "Storie" di Tucidide di Atene rappresentano il vero e proprio inizio della storiografia occidentale. Composte lungo un periodo di oltre vent'anni, dal 431 a.C. fino agli ultimi anni del secolo, furono scritte da Tucidide nel tempo in cui si svolgevano gli eventi che vi sono narrati. Riallacciandosi alla conclusione dell'opera erodotea, lo storico riprende la narrazione dell'ascesa e del declino dell'Atene democratica, colmando innanzitutto la lacuna dei cinquant'anni intercorsi fra la fine delle Guerre Persiane e il momento in cui, allo scoppio delle ostilità fra Atene e Sparta, si manifestarono i "primi sintomi" della Guerra del Peloponneso. Con occhio moderno, prospettiva critica e razionale, Tucidide elimina dai fatti che racconta i tratti mitici e favolosi tipici del lavoro di molti altri autori antichi, affinché la sua narrazione risulti utile a comprendere la natura umana, e sia composta come un'opera destinata a durare per sempre, non come un lavoro d'occasione "da ascoltare sul momento".
