Cornovaglia, 1859. Merrick Tremayne, trent'anni, menomato da un incidente capitatogli durante uno dei suoi viaggi da contrabbandiere di oppio per la Compagnia delle Indie Orientali, sta per abbandonare la decrepita dimora di famiglia. L'amico Sir Clements Markham, gioviale esploratore e geografo (veramente esistito, responsabile della spedizione di Scott al Polo Sud), lo incoraggia a intraprendere una nuova missione in Perù, per trafugare fino in Inghilterra i preziosissimi germogli di cinchona, dalla corteccia ricca di chinino, ricercatissimo come antimalarico. Merrick, sfidando il dolore e la fatica, attraversa l'oceano e si arrampica sugli altopiani peruviani scegliendo come guida Raphael, un uomo equivoco e affascinante che si è appena risvegliato da decenni di sonno; insieme partono alla volta di New Bethlehem, il villaggio dove ancora esistono tracce del passaggio di suo padre e di suo nonno. Tra foreste impenetrabili e lande desolate, anatre che esplodono in volo, tempeste di neve, sabbie mobili, lampade alimentate da polline luminescente, Merrick si ritrova infine tra le torri di ossidiana del villaggio. Una riga di sale tracciata per terra separa il luogo dalla foresta: chi la varca finisce ucciso da un'entità misteriosa...

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. Beautiful imagery, highly creative, but no real drive to it. Beautifully written, with a rich setting, wonderful twists, a dramatic plot and fantastic characterisation. I can't recommend it enough. Natasha Pulley is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.
