Adam Gordon è uno studente dell'ultimo anno di liceo alla Topeka High School. "Topeka School" è una storia di famiglia ambientata negli anni Novanta nel Midwest americano, un racconto di adolescenza e trasgressione, una diagnosi delle condizioni economiche, sociali, individuali che hanno sospinto l'ascesa di un linguaggio sprezzante e conflittuale che è diventato la nuova norma nella vita di tutti i giorni. Ben Lerner narra da diversi punti di vista i fallimenti e i successi dei Gordon, lo spettro di un passato violento, i tradimenti tra i coniugi, la sfida di crescere un figlio immerso in un tossico ambiente maschile. E il romanzo è anche una sorta di preistoria del nostro presente, del collasso del discorso pubblico sepolto dal diluvio delle parole dei social, e intuisce l'emergere di un nuovo pensiero che dalla crisi di identità dei maschi bianchi fa scaturire un desiderio di rivalsa e di potere.
