Yves Saint Laurent, uno dei più grandi creatori di moda del secolo scorso, è ricordato soprattutto come l'inventore del prét-à-porter che ha adattato al corpo femminile abiti di taglio maschile. Nel suo libro Pierre Bergé, a lungo compagno del grande sarto francese e al suo fianco per cinquant'anni, rivolgendosi all'amico scomparso, ne rivela gli aspetti più segreti. Questo epistolario insolito - il destinatario non è più tra i vivi - copre poco più di un anno, a partire dai giorni che seguono la morte dello stilista, avvenuta il 1° giugno del 2008. Le lettere sono il resoconto di un'assenza, un'assenza sempre presente, come dice lo stesso Bergé, perché il ricordo di Yves lo accompagna ovunque, nelle case che hanno abitato insieme, nei giardini di Marrakech che tanto amavano, anche nei luoghi in cui Saint Laurent, sedentario e poco incline ai viaggi, non è mai stato. Bergé non tace le fragilità e gli eccessi dell'amico, ma gli riconosce un talento e una genialità unici che si sono espressi nella moda, per "creare la quale bisogna essere un artista, anche se la moda non è un'arte". Con estrema semplicità Bergé rievoca il primo incontro, il loro amore, l'emozione che condividevano di fronte alla bellezza, ma anche gli ultimi anni, difficili e passati in solitudine, del genio della moda.
