La sera del suo settantacinquesimo compleanno, Jenny Brodal riprende a bere dopo decenni di sobrietà. Sua figlia Siri, in un disperato tentativo di ricucire i rapporti con lei – da sempre funestati dalla morte del fratellino di quattro anni – le ha organizzato una festa nel giardino della grande casa di famiglia, in un paesino costiero norvegese, festa a cui Jenny rifiuta di presenziare. Ma i problemi famigliari di Siri vanno ben al di là del doloroso legame con la madre. Suo marito Jon, romanziere in crisi d’ispirazione, finge di scrivere il libro conclusivo di una trilogia, mentre in realtà occupa il tempo intrecciando squallide relazioni con altre donne. La loro figlia maggiore è ribelle e violenta, si fa espellere da scuola. Ma il vero dramma sopraggiunge quando la baby-sitter assunta per occuparsi della minore durante l’estate scompare misteriosamente proprio la sera della festa. A questo punto il romanzo acquista la suspense di un thriller psicologico: con la scomparsa della ragazza dallo scialle rosso il malessere che sempre più insidia la vita famigliare di Siri e Jon esplode definitivamente.

I just finished The Cold Song and I really don’t know what to say about it. This book was intense and it made me feel tense while reading it.
