"Lo scandalo Wapshot" è il seguito di Cronache della famiglia Wapshot". Secondo romanzo di Cheever, ma anche il suo libro più tormentato, diario di faticose notti insonni con i sensi annebbiati dall'alcol, poi premiato con la William Dean Howells Medal nel 1965. Lo scandalo al quale il titolo fa riferimento riguarda la moglie di uno dei componenti della famiglia Wapshot, che fugge con un garzone diciottenne della locale drogheria e si rifà una vita con lui in Italia. Nella seconda metà del libro, con una scrittura tagliente e precisa, Cheever viviseziona lo strisciante razzismo della società americana: tutto ciò che è straniero, specie se in qualche modo "meridionale", genera quantomeno diffidenza, quando non aperta avversione. E il libro mette in campo proprio l'ossessione-repulsione per tutto ciò che è italiano nella società americana. In questo c'è forte il ricordo e anche la nostalgia per il periodo trascorso a Roma nel 1957, e che diventerà col tempo la matrice di tanti suoi racconti, da The Bella Lingua a Una donna senza patria o Boy in Rome. Perché, come dice il critico Francesco Longo, "l'Italia, per Cheever, non si sarebbe affatto sgretolata, né sarebbe caduta nel-l'oblio, ma sarebbe stata riedificata in America, mattone su mattone, parola su parola. Forse già nel viaggio di ritorno, Roma si sarebbe preparata nella testa di Cheever a diventare letteratura"."
