Solo ai nostri giorni lo "Specchio delle anime semplici" è stato attribuito a Margherita Porete, straordinaria personalità di donna, di cui, peraltro, sappiamo solo quel poco che risulta dal processo per eresia, per il quale fu bruciata a Parigi nel 1310. Tra prosa e poesia, in forma di dialogo - anzi, di "contrasto" - il libro descrive i gradi del cammino d'amore dell'anima che cerca Dio, scoprendo la necessità di andare, per amore, oltre l'amore, ovvero, per Dio, oltre Dio, finché, nel completo distacco da se stessa, fattasi nulla, si trasforma in Dio stesso. Giudicata pericolosa e perciò occultata per secoli dalla condanna ecclesiastica, l'opera fu però nota ed amata da alcune grandi personalità della storia della mistica, come ad esempio santa Caterina da Genova, ed oggi, libera da censure, appare in tutto il suo rilievo. Non a caso anche Meister Eckhart, presente a Parigi nel medesimo periodo del processo e della morte di Margherita, trasse proprio dallo 'Specchio' alcune delle sue tesi più radicali e paradossali sul nulla dell'anima e sul nulla divino. La presente versione in lingua italiana, con originale a fronte, introduzione e un ricchissimo apparato di note, permette al lettore l'incontro con un libro ai vertici della spiritualità cristiana.

I didn't think I would "like" this book, and thats really not why I read it. I read it because of one line in "World Without End" which referenced it. It's kind of a cheat to add this book to my list, but since it's the topic of my dissertation, I thought it would be a good thing to have on my site. A mix of my not-favorites things...heresy and court poetry. While Porete is certainly an interesting historical figure my interest in her does not extend to her interpretation of the Free Spirit heresy. What I am interested in however is how this woman submitted her book to church authorities in Par Leggi tutto
So impressed by this read over a decade ago, will read again, now in Classics of Western Spirituality edition. This book is work to read, but worth the effort. And not a book for persons unready to fall over the precipice from dogmatic constraints, or possibly very good selection for those needing a Leggi tutto

I spent so much time with this book it feels appropriate to put it on here. Love Marguerite and all of her crazy ideas.
I found this edition of the Classics of Western Spirituality pretty difficult. Porete was a beguine who was denounced and burned as a heretic in 1310.
