What can I say? Before picking up Julia Lovell's novel "The Opium War," I knew virtually nothing about the subject and the little I did know was wrong. Informative and a sometimes riveting narrative style delivery but verged at times to sarcasm aimed at both the Chinese and the British. No doubt deserved but maybe a little too obvious for my liking. I really enjoyed this book. Lovell goes in-depth on chronicling the (First) Opium War, before zooming out and examining how both Western and Chinese perspectives and history deals with its legacy.
