Romanzo del terrore composto da una serie di racconti collegati tra loro in cui Dyson e Phillips - giovani intellettuali le cui principali occupazioni sono oziose passeggiate per le vie di Londra intervallate da amabili dissertazioni filosofiche - incappano in curiosi personaggi sbucati misteriosamente da non si sa dove, ognuno dei quali decide di raccontare ai pazienti ascoltatori la propria inquietante vicenda per poi ritornare, altrettanto misteriosamente, da dove sono venuti. I due si trovano, così, immischiati in una complicata sequela di casi inspiegabili e misteriosi: improvvise apparizioni di monete rare e non meno di esseri umani, corpi che si disciolgono per intervento di sconosciute polveri chimiche, tavolette con sopra criptiche annotazioni, ma soprattutto cadaveri sempre rinvenuti "in circostanze misteriose" (quelli che si ha la fortuna di ritrovare...). Ogni digressione è un nuovo velo calato sugli occhi dei lettori per coprire la storia più complessa e inquietante di tutte fino al magistrale epilogo, che spazza via ogni inganno con un unico gesto. Ne "I tre impostori" Arthur Machen ci scorta in una Londra notturna e misteriosa, dove ogni coincidenza è possibile e la realtà quotidiana assume colori tragici e crudeli, tra omicidi e sparizioni, criminali enigmatici e sinistri complotti.
