È necessario che «la ruota del tempo compia ancora un certo numero di giri perché la massa cominci a comprendere quello che Jung intendeva dire». Il pronostico di questo saggio risalente al 1972 si è avverato alla lettera, e la sua lungimiranza va estesa anche alla posteriore accoglienza da parte della psicologia accademica, che allora sospettava in Jung solo il mistico «confuso». In effetti l’asincronia tra Jung e la propria contemporaneità percorre come un illuminante Leitmotiv le pagine della sua allieva Marie-Louise von Franz. Non era facile per nessuno – lo riconosce – mettersi al passo della novità incarnata dal pensiero junghiano. Inquietava e suscitava scandalo quel prendere così sul serio l'inconscio, con effetti tellurici sull'intera architettura delle conoscenze umane. Ma chi, come lei, fin dalla giovinezza ha dato ascolto alle potenze psichiche si trova in una prossimità ideale con il maestro, frequentato dal 1933, e ce lo mostra attraverso inquadrature che ancora oggi restano uniche. Lasciandosi «guidare, per così dire, dalla melodia che fa da sfondo al mito interiore» di Jung, von Franz riesce in un’impresa per nulla scontata: avvicinare i lettori, senza la gabbia di un ordine cronologico o di una trattazione sistematica, alle esperienze numinose da cui era posseduto e allo smisurato sapere a cui attingevano. Quell’avventura interiore ineguagliata, quel «mito» che assorbì il medico della psiche per tutta la vita, avrebbero sparso i loro fermenti nella nostra cultura e l’avrebbero segnata nel profondo.

I recommend reading this book as an excellent way to connect or reconnect with Jung and his ideas. Von Franz is the most skillful and eloquent translator of Jung's ideas, and she explains them with an ease that Jung himself never seems to have had. Perhaps the clearest, most complete and concise summary of Jung's ideas put to paper. For anyone who is even semi-seriously interested in the philosophy/psychology of Jung, its history and place, this book is the single best book to read.
This, like so many expositions of analytical psychology, is a hagiography of C.G. Jung by one of his disciples. Personally, I approached him with a similar attitude in college, so much of his writing being about topics quite new to me. It's beautifully written work. I got the feeling that it may be from a true admirer of Jung, given the fact that little critique was observed. Clearly a great read by one of Jung's best and brightest students, not a disciple, that is projecting an aura of religious indoctrination.
