Huck Finn non è semplicemente un sognatore ribelle dotato di una fervida immaginazione, come l’inseparabile amico Tom Sawyer; è un vero emarginato: figlio dell’ubriacone del villaggio, è ignorante, maleducato, bugiardo e insofferente della vita civile. Per sottrarsi al padre disgraziato e all’«educazione» della vedova Douglas, che lo vuole «civilizzare» da quando è stato affidato alle sue cure, si unisce a Jim, uno schiavo di colore in fuga dai suoi padroni verso uno stato abolizionista. A bordo di una zattera i due discendono lungo il Mississippi, vivendo una sorta di idillio fluviale, minacciato di continuo dalla violenza degli uomini e delle istituzioni. Concepito all’inizio come seguito del Tom Sawyer, Le avventure di Huckleberry Finn (1885) acquista man mano la fisionomia di opera autonoma, quasi un prototipo del romanzo on the road che tanta fortuna avrà nella letteratura americana, in cui l’avventura picaresca si trasforma in un viaggio di iniziazione alla ricerca di sé e della libertà dai condizionamenti sociali.
