Tom Sawyer è un ragazzino vivace che vive con la zia Polly e il fratellastro Sid in una cittadina sulle rive del Mississippi. Conduce una monotona vita scolastica, ma è pieno di immaginazione e in compagnia dell’amico prediletto, Huck Finn, sogna avventure con i pirati, imprese eroiche e scoperte di grandi tesori nascosti. Sempre al centro di guai, ideatore di giochi e di burle, è il primo attore di quel teatro dell’infanzia che Twain ci presenta come età non dell’innocenza ma dell’ingegnosità e della messinscena. Finché un giorno la realtà prende il sopravvento sulla fantasia e la morte irrompe sulla scena in tutta la sua brutalità.
Pubblicato nel 1876, Tom Sawyer nasce da un soprassalto della memoria. Alla ricerca degli anni perduti della sua giovinezza nel Missouri, Twain rievoca un’epoca storica – la nazione americana del mito della frontiera, attanagliata da problemi razziali, da laceranti divisioni di classe, dall’incombere di un’assurda guerra civile – e un luogo d’origine, un paesaggio che ha i lineamenti incantati di un idillio vissuto all’ombra del Mississippi, il grande padre totemico di tutta la narrativa di Twain.
