Nella scienza e nella fisica persiste l'idea «profondamente errata» che una volta spiegata «ogni cosa esistente nel mondo fisico e ciò che a essa accade», allora si è spiegata ogni cosa. Eppure, immaginate un computer programmato per produrre sul proprio schermo una stringa di zeri. È una sua proprietà fattuale, che riguarda il suo stato attuale, ciò che esso è. Il computer, però, potrebbe essere riprogrammato per generare altre stringhe, e questa è una sua proprietà controfattuale. La macchina potrebbe non essere mai programmata in questo modo, ma il fatto che potrebbe esserlo si rivela essenziale. Per capire che cos'è un computer, quindi, è necessario portarne alla luce tutte le «potenzialità». Chiara Marletto, fisica teorica e ricercatrice all'Università di Oxford, rivendica quindi la necessità di incorporare nelle spiegazioni scientifiche anche le proprietà controfattuali, finora trascurate. Come nell'esempio del computer, queste proprietà riguardano ciò che «potrebbe» o «non potrebbe» essere - in altre parole, la scienza del possibile e dell'impossibile -, e forniscono un diverso modo di spiegare la realtà, una prospettiva radicalmente nuova da cui osservare il mondo e descriverne il funzionamento. Le spiegazioni controfattuali, infatti, sono in grado di esprimere le caratteristiche essenziali delle leggi della natura e si sono rivelate cruciali in diversi ambiti scientifici, dalla teoria quantistica dell'informazione alla termodinamica. Esse inoltre promettono di inaugurare scenari inediti non solo nel campo della fisica, ma anche nella biologia, nella computer science e nell'Intelligenza Artificiale. Sono il segreto per affrontare problemi da lungo tempo irrisolti, la chiave per accedere a una comprensione più profonda e complessa dell'universo e della realtà che ci circonda, e per compiere un passo definitivo oltre i vincoli e i confini della concezione tradizionale della fisica.

Very poetic, but I don’t actually understand what the framework offers concretely. I don’t know if there is something deep here, or if it is just weaving words. Awful. I'm 2/3 of the way through (and I will finish it) but the book basically overpromises. To paraphrase Einstein, you don't really understand something if you cannot explain it to your grandmother. Little side stories are ridiculous. Fine but overly self important The ideas are interesting. The delivery is a tad awkward. The tone is going for something that doesn’t work for me. Flip through it, but don’t read word for word.
Intriguing. It contains some elegant definitions for "information", "knowledge" and "work", and genuinely insightful ideas. Some parts remain, however, frustratingly vague.
