Tra i più noti e studiati dialoghi di Platone, il Menone è centrale nella produzione del filosofo non solo cronologicamente - fu composto in una fase di transizione fra il periodo giovanile e quello maturo - ma soprattutto per la varietà delle tematiche che affronta: verte attorno al tema della virtù e della conoscenza, e tuttavia in esso Socrate riflette con Menone, il suo giovane e ambizioso interlocutore, anche di politica, matematica, pedagogia, dialettica. Dando vita a un dialogo ricco e denso, che contiene il celebre esperimento maieutico in cui Socrate conduce uno schiavo incolto a risolvere un problema di geometria, e che, come conclude Ferrari nella sua approfondita introduzione, "assume per più di un aspetto la forma di un autentico microcosmo della filosofia platonica".
