Fin dalla sua uscita quest’opera ha avuto un’ottima accoglienza nelle nostre università, sia per il prestigio dell’autore – da generazioni il corso di Artin «fa testo» al Massachusetts Institute of Technology, uno dei templi della cultura scientifica mondiale – sia per le sue qualità intrinseche, che ne fanno un prodotto molto diverso dalla maggior parte dei manuali attualmente in uso. Particolarmente indovinata è l’esposizione, rigorosa quanto basta per soddisfare le esigenze dei matematici, ma non così astratta da chiudere irrimediabilmente il campo dei possibili utenti. In luogo di una presentazione formale di sapore bourbakista, abbiamo la costruzione di una sensibilità algebrica «dal basso», sulla base di problemi ed esempi concreti tratti da vari contesti. Una scelta didatticamente efficace che privilegia i contenuti e porta più rapidamente al cuore dei concetti davvero interessanti. E questi riguardano molto spesso i collegamenti con la geometria, in linea con l’indirizzo oggi prevalente in ogni campo della matematica.

Written in casual English, nonetheless very thorough and rigorous. Gives very nice and natural introductions into many "next topics" such as Galois theory and especially Algebraic Number Theory.
This book is easy to read if I were already introduced to algebra. I had to read Dummit and Foote as a reference. I tend to think of this book as an artistic presentation of algebra rather than a textbook that introduce me systematic to abstract algebra. I wish the author could put down definitions
The summum bonum all undergrad algebra texts must strive, and fail, to be.
Textbook used during my AA classes. Its a decent introduction, and is quite concise - the other algebra textbooks I used (Dummit, Knapp, Hungerford, Lang) were generally several times longer. Artin why did you put an entire undergraduate study of mathematics in one book. At least the quotes are cool and the problems would also be cool if they did not lose me so much sleep. But in a good way?
