È estate ad Atlantic City, ma la crisi economica incombe, sul lungomare i turisti sono pochi, le luci dei casinò sono spente e nella palude dietro il Sunset Motel, a ovest della città, i cadaveri di due ragazze aspettano che qualcuno li scopra. C'è solo una persona che è al corrente della loro presenza, l'uomo che le ha uccise. E poi c'è Clara, sedici anni, una giovane sensitiva che legge i tarocchi e lotta per attirare i clienti che le permettono di pagare l'affitto e di mettere da parte qualcosa per soddisfare il suo sogno: andare in California in cerca della madre che l'ha abbandonata da piccola. Quando nel locale in cui lavora arriva un uomo a chiedere notizie della nipote di cui non c'è più traccia, le visioni di Clara si intensificano, diventando molto reali e inquietanti, tanto da farle sospettare che siano collegate ai recenti casi di donne scomparse in città. Poi Clara incontra Lily, una giovane critica d'arte che si stava costruendo una carriera a New York quando una brutta storia l'ha rispedita ad Atlantic City, dove l'unico lavoro che ha trovato è quello di receptionist nella spa di un casinò. Tra loro nasce un'intesa immediata, tanto che Clara pensa che Lily possa aiutarla a risolvere il mistero delle ragazze scomparse. Ma Lily ha anche i suoi demoni da affrontare. Eppure, se riusciranno ad assemblare in tempo i pezzi del mosaico, potranno salvare un'altra vita, sempre che i loro sforzi non attirino l'attenzione di chi uccide nell'ombra.
