Graziosa come un gatto e nera come la notte, Punacci è la giovane capra che una coppia di anziani pastori riceve in dono da una figura avvolta nel mistero. Nelle mani vuote dei suoi nuovi padroni è una risorsa preziosa, un miracolo che promette ricchezza. Nonostante le apparenze, infatti, la capra rivela un animo combattivo e cerca di farsi strada nel piccolo mondo che le è concesso di vedere, tra il capanno dei due coniugi e i campi da pascolo circostanti. Le altre capre del gregge la invidiano e la maltrattano, fino a quando Punacci non conosce il mondo esterno e le sue leggi, abbandonandosi perdutamente al primo amore. Alla felicità di chi può condividere la vita con qualcuno che ne comprenda la storia e le aspettative, tuttavia, seguono presto emozioni e consapevolezze più amare. Punacci, ormai adulta, proverà il dolore della costrizione e l'annichilimento di chi perde tutto senza riscatto, in un turbine di sentimenti che la porteranno a interrogarsi sul senso della vita e sul valore della morte, fino all'alienazione. La storia di questa capra nera, però, non è solo un percorso alla scoperta di sé e dell'altro, ma la metafora attraverso la quale si esprimono coloro che non hanno voce né nome. È un inno contro la dipendenza e i vincoli, un canto all'impotenza umana rispetto ai limiti della storia e della società. Proprio come una capra, infatti, l'uomo corre senza meta, incurante di coloro che restano indietro, finché non resta indietro a sua volta.
