A Onomichi, sonnacchiosa località sul mare interno del Giappone, è come se il tempo si fosse fermato. Qui, all’ombra dei venticinque templi accoccolati tra le colline, c’è il caffè di nonna Ayako. È da tanto che Kyo non va a farle visita, ma adesso, dopo essere stato bocciato all’esame di ammissione all’università, ha un disperato bisogno di allontanarsi da Tokyo per capire che cosa vuole davvero. Tuttavia, se sperava di avere dalla nonna affetto e comprensione, si sbaglia di grosso: Ayako è una donna brusca e ruvida come la corteccia di un albero secolare, soprattutto con lui. A poco a poco, però, Kyo si rende conto che quella freddezza è solo una corazza che la nonna si è cucita addosso per nascondere le ferite del passato e il rimpianto per un errore che non riesce a perdonarsi. In realtà, Kyo e la nonna sono più simili di quanto non sembri, e sarà proprio lui, con le sue imperfezioni e le sue insicurezze, a darle il coraggio di liberarsi del peso di troppi segreti…
Ci sono storie che ci trovano quando ne abbiamo più bisogno. E la storia di Kyo e Ayako riaccende l’entusiasmo di Flo e la spinge a mettersi alla ricerca del suo misterioso autore. Quel libro è stato come una luce capace d’illuminare gli angoli più bui della sua anima, e ora lei vorrebbe tradurlo e portare quella luce a più persone possibili. Perché non esiste piacere più grande di condividere un romanzo che ci ha toccato il cuore.

I have pretty mixed feelings about this book. One on side, I really enjoyed Kyo and Ayako’s story and how their relationship evolved throughout the book and how they learned from each other. The concept of a story within a story is intriguing, but I found myself disliking Flo and wishing this book were only about Kyo and Ayako. Everything about this book was beautiful….a powerful message delivered with ease... and it radiates Studio Ghibli vibes, which I was all in for.🥹
