Come se la passa la nostra specie alla fine degli anni Dieci? Chomsky affida a questo libro, frutto più recente della sua riflessione, le proprie idee sui temi più scottanti dell’attualità globale: la crisi dei rifugiati, l’amministrazione Trump, il terrorismo islamico e la guerra all’ISIS, le crepe nell’Unione Europea, le prospettive di una pace giusta fra Israele e Palestina, la crisi climatica, la serissima minaccia nucleare. Il quadro tracciato dal «maggiore intellettuale vivente» non è certo roseo: il capitalismo neoliberale impera, trova sempre minore resistenza nei governi nazionali e negli organismi internazionali, e si fa sempre meno scrupoli. Che fare? Non si può certo star fermi. Occorre organizzare le lotte e portarle avanti con la massima decisione possibile; mantenere, nonostante tutto, lo slancio di un inscalfibile ottimismo della volontà. Per questo, il libro del novantenne Chomsky è un libro pieno di futuro: guai a non incoraggiare l’azione politica e a non approfondire le prospettive d iun cambiamento radicale! Oggi più che mai ne va della sopravvivenza stessa di Homo sapiens.
