Il compito di occuparsi di Lily Rowan grava perciò soprattutto sulle spalle di Archie Goodwin. Un compito semplice proteggere un'amica di Lily, Ann Amory, da oscure e imprecisate minacce e gradito, visto che Lily ha bei capelli e dita affusolate. Peccato che Ann Amory venga trovata morta con una sciarpa azzurra legata intorno alla gola, la lingua penzoloni e gli occhi che le schizzano fuori dalle orbite. In "Trappola esplosiva", Wolfe, diventato consulente dell'esercito, indaga sulla fine del capitano Cross per conto del colonnello Ryder, che, in una fase cruciale delle indagini, va incontro anche lui alla morte, ucciso da una bomba a mano, un aggeggio rosa posato sulla sua scrivania.
