L'Odissea di Omero, fra i più antichi racconti di viaggio della storia dell'umanità, è il poema che narra del "tormentato ritorno" di Odisseo alla sua patria Itaca e alla sua famiglia, come egli stesso lo descrive al re dei Feaci nel IX canto, che l'eroe affronta perché "niente è più dolce per un uomo della sua patria e dei genitori, pur se abita una casa opulenta, ma lontano, in terra straniera, separato da quelli". Eppure l'Odissea è molto più del racconto di un viaggio avventuroso. Con i suoi ventiquattro canti, che narrano le vicende di Odisseo nei dieci anni che seguirono la conquista di Troia, quelle del figlio Telemaco partito alla sua ricerca, la lunga attesa di Penelope, sposa fedele, e infine la riconquista del trono e del palazzo del re, il poema di Omero è certamente una delle più complesse e affascinanti epopee della storia. Nelle parole del poeta Nikolaj Vasil'evic Gogol', l'Odissea è "decisamente la più perfetta opera di tutti i secoli", e "abbraccia tutto il mondo antico, la vita pubblica e domestica, tutte le sfere di attività degli uomini di allora". Ma è anche e soprattutto una profonda allegoria alla ricerca dei confini dell'uomo, un testo introspettivo e favoloso, popolato da genti fantastiche, dee seduttrici e maghe ammaliatrici, giganti cannibali, sirene e mostri marini. Quello che Omero dipinge con i suoi versi è un mondo insidioso e bellissimo, che oltrepassa persino i confini della vita e della morte...
