Sinossi

History changes as invisibly as the future, though more painfully in having tasted what is lost. The City Always Wins is astonishing, intelligent throughout and alternately inspiring and saddening, a novel of the Egyptian Arab Spring that covers the macro tides and currents of the movement's deve
Sometimes you appreciate a novel more than you enjoy reading it. The City Always Wins is important and well written, but it didn't always work for me. I'm still giving it 4 stars for its strengths. The novel takes place over a few years in the very recent past in Egypt. It is told primarily from the Leggi tutto
“It will start with a bomb and there will be no escape.” Tough, bleak and yet so inspiring: The City Always Wins draws the reader right into the frenzy of the Egyptian revolution of 2011. Similar to Les Miserables you follow people fighting for freedom and justice, and yet from the start you feel h Leggi tutto
Leggi tutto
I had high hopes for this novel, despite its awards. The novel is an insider’s look at the Arab Spring uprising in 2011, something few know except in the abstract. The author’s job, at first glance, seems impossible: set out the carnage and the chaos but in a clear, compelling way for the reader to Leggi tutto
