La Londra degli anni Trenta è un mondo in cui il denaro e le convenzioni sociali hanno un ruolo determinante per il futuro di una persona. Gordon Comstock, ultimo rampollo di una famiglia della classe media tormentata dalle difficoltà economiche, avrebbe i numeri per farsi strada, se non fosse che è un poeta e, soprattutto, un ribelle. Decide quindi di sottrarsi alla dittatura del denaro per scrivere il grande poema della sua vita, e accetta un lavoro mal pagato in una squallida libreria. Imbocca così una spirale discendente, in cui rischierà di perdersi, e si salverà solo grazie alla dedizione della fidanzata Rosemary, sempre al suo fianco. "In alto l'aspidistra", proposto qui in una nuova traduzione che restituisce in modo attuale le sfumature lessicali dell'originale, è un capolavoro che oggi più che mai urge rileggere, una parodia di un certo mondo intellettuale inglese che per lo sguardo disincantato di Orwell sulla società del tempo anticipa i suoi grandi romanzi distopici scritti nel dopoguerra. I buddy read this book with my bestie, Ariel Bissett. We spent more time on Voxer than actually reading this novel most nights but in our defense we spent most of that time gushing about Orwell.
