Anche nella gloriosa Royal Navy, però, la fortuna spesso ha buon gioco sul valore e nel momento in cui – finalmente! – gli viene conferito il suo primo comando, Jack si ritrova a bordo della Sophie, una corvetta che certo non rifulge di gloria marinara. Eppure il capitano Aubrey non può e non vuole lasciarsi sfuggire la tanto sospirata occasione: persuaso che «con la disciplina unita all’audacia si possono ripulire gli oceani» è ben determinato a rendere la Sophie una nave modello, splendente di ottoni e temibile per gli avversari, nella fattispecie i francesi e gli spagnoli. Ci riuscirà, non senza aver sperimentato i lati più oscuri e dolorosi del comando: la solitudine (appena alleviata dalla calorosa amicizia con Stephen Maturin, il medico di bordo); la difficoltà di governare un equipaggio di uomini duri e spietati, pronti a tutto per racimolare qualche ghinea (ma talvolta sorprendentemente nobili e generosi); la crudele logica delle battaglie sul mare (dove un vento contrario può significare la gloria o il disonore) e, non ultima, la gelida severità dei suoi superiori (che lo costringeranno a presentarsi davanti alla corte marziale)... Sullo sfondo di una meticolosa e appassionata ricerca storica, Patrick O’Brian non si accontenta di restituirci intatti il fascino e l’emozione delle avventure di mare, ma dà anche vita a un universo animato e pittoresco, vivacissimo e trascinante, in cui la visione del navigare come unica «esperienza autentica» di Joseph Conrad e C.S. Forester si fonde con la sorridente e umanissima sensibilità psicologica di Charles Dickens.
