La cacciata dal paradiso per Loung Ung ha una data: il 17 aprile 1975. Fino ad allora, la sua infanzia, come quella dei sei fratelli, è stata meravigliosa, grazie all'amore della mamma e del papà, un alto ufficiale del governo cambogiano. Loung amava addentrarsi con la famiglia nei coloratissimi mercati di Phnom Penh, dove vivevano, tra profumi di zuppe di noodles e noccioline tostate e chiassosi animali. Ma quel 17 aprile, quando lei ha solo cinque anni, il paradiso va in frantumi. Gli Khmer Rossi di Pol Pot prendono la città. Tutta la Cambogia piomba nell'incubo di un regime brutale. La famiglia Ung è in pericolo, data la posizione del padre, e deve abbandonare la casa, le comodità, la sua stessa identità, per fuggire in campagna e nascondersi di villaggio in villaggio. Infine devono separarsi, con la speranza di ritrovarsi tutti un giorno. I fratelli di Loung vengono imprigionati, invece lei, così piccola, è destinata a un campo di addestramento per giovani soldati. Per lunghi anni dovrà lottare ogni singolo momento per non cedere alla fame, alla fatica e alla disperazione. La violenza la circonda, e i suoi occhi di bambina sono testimoni di cose che nessuno dovrebbe vedere in una vita. Quasi due milioni di cambogiani morirono in quel genocidio. Quando finalmente, con l'arrivo dei vietnamiti, l'incubo finisce, per Loung inizia la lunga ricostruzione di se stessa e della sua famiglia. Con una forza d'animo incredibile per una bambina e gli insegnamenti del padre, riuscirà a ricrearsi una nuova vita, un nuovo e diverso paradiso.

I feel the need to explain why I ended up giving this one three stars. I expected to come out of this with no less than a four star review. The three stars are all for the content. The book gives some insight into how it must have felt to be dragged out of your home and forced into the countryside, to see atrocities around you, to lose close members of your family, and not really understand what was happening or what would happen next.
