La telefonata che Jamie Ball riceve è a dir poco allarmante. Quelle che sente sono le parole della sua futura moglie, Logan Somerville. Logan ha appena parcheggiato la macchina nel garage sotto il palazzo in cui vive, un posto che non è mai piaciuto a nessuno dei due, male illuminato e poco sicuro. Gli ha appena detto di avere visto un uomo, in quel parcheggio, uno sconosciuto. Poi un urlo straziante, e il silenzio.
Quando, poco dopo, la polizia arriva sul posto, la donna è scomparsa, lasciando la macchina e il cellulare come uniche prove del suo passaggio.
Quello stesso pomeriggio, alcuni operai, scavando in un parco in un diverso quartiere di Brighton, scoprono i resti di una ragazza morta oltre trent’anni prima.
In apparenza sembrano due casi del tutto scollegati, ma l’ispettore Roy Grace, incaricato di seguire la prima indagine, non può non notare che le vittime sono molto simili nell’aspetto… Un sospetto che viene presto confermato da un’altra sparizione, e dal ritrovamento di un altro, recente cadavere, che ha lo stesso marchio a fuoco trovato sul corpo seppellito nel parco. I collegamenti sono troppi per poter essere ignorati, e le due indagini vengono fatte confluire.
Possibile che tutto sia opera di un serial killer, il primo a Brighton in oltre ottant’anni?
