Si può attingere col linguaggio all'intima essenza delle cose? Questo è il tema del «Cratilo», uno dei dialoghi più brillanti di Platone, denso di spunti e problematiche ancora attuali e dibattuti. Ermogene e Cratilo, un discepolo di Eraclito, discutono sulla natura dei nomi: mentre il primo sostiene che siano una semplice convenzione, Cratilo è convinto che corrispondano alla natura delle cose che designano, e siano quindi l'unico mezzo per arrivare alla conoscenza delle cose stesse. Socrate, dopo essersi scatenato in una brillante performance etimologica, non dà ragione né all'uno né all'altro: un effettivo rapporto tra le parole e le cose non si può negare né dimostrare.
