Nel suo testamento Virgilio disponeva che l’Eneide fosse bruciata. A trarla in salvo fu chi gliela aveva commissionata: l’imperatore Augusto. Ma nei suoi versi il poeta non celebra le gesta di Augusto e la storia contemporanea di Roma; si rifugia invece nel mito, narrando la vicenda dolorosa di un eroe che, in obbedienza alla volontà degli dei e soffocando i propri sentimenti, va insieme alla sua gente in cerca di una nuova patria nella terra del tramonto: l’Esperia. Con l’Eneide Virgilio portò alla massima espressione il legame di mito e storia che caratterizza così peculiarmente la cultura e la psicologia dell’antica Roma.
