Secondo una leggenda che si tramanda di generazione in generazione, esistono delle speciali caramelle al limone che possono guidarci sul sentiero giusto, mostrandoci le strade che abbiamo scelto di non percorrere. Lolly, trentatré anni, si sente persa e insoddisfatta. Per questo la saggia zia Gert le appoggia sul palmo della mano tre caramelle a forma di spicchio cosparse di zucchero, insieme a poche, semplici istruzioni: scartarle prima di andare a letto, sorbirle lentamente fino alla fine e appoggiare la testa sul cuscino. Un po’ scettica ma anche curiosa, Lolly segue le indicazioni. Così, all’improvviso, si trova catapultata in un ristorante tutto suo sulla costa inglese. La notte successiva, invece, incontra la madre come se non fosse mai scomparsa, e quella dopo ancora ha una famiglia con il suo primo amore. Ogni volta fa sogni così vividi da sembrare più un’alternativa possibile che il prodotto della sua immaginazione. Ma questi scenari durano il tempo di una caramella e a tutti manca qualcosa, perché ogni scelta comporta una rinuncia. Forse, però, la zia non voleva farle vivere un sogno. Forse, il suo era un invito a osservare il presente con occhi diversi. Perché le nostre scelte passate possono sembrare un po’ aspre, come le caramelle al limone, ma il retrogusto è dolce se troviamo dentro di noi la forza per cambiare il futuro.
