Si sa che ventotto fiorini al mese sono un grosso prezzo da pagare per assoldare un uomo che ti difenda dalle creature selvagge. La stessa cifra, però, non è lontanamente sufficiente se la creatura da cui bisogna proteggersi è una feroce Viverna: un mostro alato le cui fauci sono il terrore di ogni cavaliere. Lottare contro questi esseri non è una sfida da tutti. Servono un lungo allenamento, l'età giusta e una buona dose di fortuna. Il Cavaliere rosso possiede tutti questi requisiti; è giovane e desideroso di trarre fama e profitto da eroiche avventure. Per questo, quando lui e la sua compagnia vengono assoldati dalla Madre badessa per difendere un monastero tormentato da una spietata creatura alata, non si lascia sfuggire l'occasione. Il monastero è un luogo ricco e la missione non sembra, tutto sommato, inaffrontabile. Ben presto, però, il Cavaliere rosso si renderà conto di aver condotto i suoi uomini in un'avventura non meno pericolosa e sanguinaria di una guerra.

image: This was a LONG book - 774 pages, with a fairly small font. I thought it was excellent. Really enjoyed it. I've known about the book for a long time but was put off by knowing that there are a great many (20?) point of view characters. I tend to prefer a small number of (often singular) points Leggi tutto
What a fantastic read. I can't remember when I've enjoyed a book so much. Loved the blend of historical with fantasy, the realism of medieval life combined with absorbing characters and a driving plot. I didn't want it to end, and can't wait for book 2.
My rating for Red Knight fluctuated throughout the book, but even if it had ended up as 3 stars, it would still go into my favourites shelf. I've used author's own picture, because this deserves a nod and why the hell not.. Story starts a bit confusing and the numerous PoV characters doesn't help with Leggi tutto
