Scritta dopo la "Poetica", la "Retorica" appartiene all'ultimo periodo della vita di Aristotele. Ci è stata tramandata in tre libri che l'antico dossografo, Diogene Laerzio, ricorda separatamente. I primi due libri hanno per oggetto generale l'argomentazione, mentre il terzo prende forma dalla composizione di due trattatelli, rispettivamente sullo "stile" (elocutio) e sull'ordine" (dispostilo) delle parti del discorso. Riassumendone altrimenti i contenuti, il primo libro si potrebbe considerare "il libro dell'oratore", il secondo "il libro del pubblico", il terzo, infine, quello più vicino alle tematiche della retorica tradizionale, "il libro della comunicazione". L'importanza attribuita nei primi due libri al ragionamento retorico, alle argomentazioni "concepite" dall'oratore (I libro) e "recepite" dall'uditorio (II libro), sta a indicare il contributo che Aristotele apporta alla retorica tradizionale, proponendo una retorica del ragionamento in luogo di quella della mozione degli affetti, una retorica di cui l'elocutio (lo "stile") è ormai solo una parte e, certo, non la più importante.

I believe the original thinkers such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates are worthy of reading. However, much of their early work is quite funny to read today. This is not only a great book about rhetoric, but about human nature and its tendencies. It reminded me of the chanakya niti. I loved it.
You may never have read anything by Aristotle; but if you've ever taken a college writing course, you've had him as your teacher.
