Scritte nell'arco di dieci anni, dal gennaio del 1912 al febbraio del 1922, e apparse l'anno successivo, le Elegie duinesi rappresentano, con i Sonetti a Orfeo, lo straordinario compimento di una vicenda poetica ed esistenziale che resta come una delle massime e più profonde espressioni della poesia di tutti i tempi. Come scrive Sabrina Mori Carmignani nella prefazione che accompagna questa sua traduzione del capolavoro rilkiano, «le Elegie duinesi sono un invito a conoscere se stessi attraverso vive immagini di senso, rispetto alle quali l'io, come si legge nella Nona elegia, si riconosce principiante. In questo, che è anche un cammino realizzativo costellato di figure universali e archetipiche - prima tra tutte l'angelo -, l'io è un apolide in cerca di casa. Consapevole del limite dettato dalla propria condizione effimera e migrante, ma anche dall'impossibilità di sentire con la stessa intensità dell'angelo, l'io poetico intona un canto che, in questo senso, non può non essere elegiaco».
