"Nel labirinto", il quarto romanzo di Alain Robbe-Grillet, fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1959. Erano gli anni in cui si stava raccogliendo intorno a una piccola casa editrice (Les Éditions de Minuit) e imponendo ai lettori il più prestigioso gruppo di scrittori in lingua francese del dopoguerra (oltre a Robbe-Grillet, Michel Butor, Claude Simon, Samuel Beckett, Nathalie Sarraute). Considerato il capofila del «nuovo romanzo», Robbe-Grillet ebbe con "Nel labirinto" la sua definitiva consacrazione. Opera di compiuta maturità espressiva, questo romanzo si rivela forse il più felice e coinvolgente tra quelli scritti dal grande narratore francese. Oggi, ormai distante dalle accese discussioni che "Nel labirinto" provocò, il lettore può finalmente valutare senza pregiudizi l'intatta novità del romanzo e cogliere, nella «parabola» del soldato che erra in una città deserta alla ricerca di una persona che non conosce, la metafora di un percorso che ciascuno di noi, anche oggi, compie tentando di decifrare i segni e le tracce enigmatiche che esso incessantemente ci propone.
