Uscito per la prima volta in Italia nel 1983 con il titolo Jesus Rex, questo romanzo narra la parabola terrena di Gesù di Nazareth così come non era mai stata raccontata. Per farlo Robert Graves dispiega il retaggio di una vita dedicata allo studio delle Scritture, del mito in ogni sua più remota e raffinata espressione, nonché della storia dell’ebraismo e del cristianesimo delle origini, attingendo tanto alle fonti canoniche quanto ai testi apocrifi, in un costante dialogo con i grandi pensatori della filosofia greca. L’esito è un romanzo audace, in bilico tra storia e finzione, che rivela un volto inedito e assai umano di Gesù. La voce narrante è quella di Agabo il Decapolitano, un funzionario romano della fine del I secolo d.C., che ripercorre la nascita, la giovinezza, la morte e la resurrezione di un personaggio straordinariamente carismatico. Quello che ne esce è il ritratto di Gesù non come essere divino, ma come uomo non privo di difetti, piegato dal suo stesso destino, in una rielaborazione che è una miscela irresistibile di ricerca, storia e immaginazione.
