Gli appartamenti delle persone morte senza nessuno accanto hanno un odore particolare, quello della solitudine. Andrew lo sa bene: è un funzionario del Comune di Londra incaricato di rintracciare i parenti delle persone che muoiono sole. Spesso è l'unico presente ai loro funerali. Ma almeno a casa ha una famiglia ad aspettarlo, o così credono i suoi colleghi. In realtà l'unica cosa che lo aspetta sono i suoi trenini elettrici. Al colloquio per l'assunzione Andrew ha mentito, e da allora è incastrato nella sua bugia, al punto che ci crede un po' anche lui. Ma a volte basta poco per mandare in crisi l'equilibrio di un'esistenza intera, come l'arrivo di una nuova collega. Di fronte al turbinio di allegria e libertà di Peggy, Andrew si ritrova spiazzato, con le spalle al muro. Di colpo si accorge che prendersi il rischio di vivere vale la pena.
