La sola cosa che Peter Blood desiderasse era vivere in santa pace, esercitando il suo mestiere di medico e fumando a tempo perso la sua pipa. Sorpreso a curare un ribelle ferito, e ingiustamente processato per aver ordito la congiura, Blood viene ridotto alla condizione di schiavo e spedito nei Caraibi. Alle Barbados sarà comprato dal colonnello Bishop, un ricchissimo proprietario terriero deciso a sfruttare le doti del medico-schiavo, ricambiandone con reiterate violenze e continui soprusi la generosità. Tanto più che Blood avrà il torto di innamorarsi di Arabella, la (bellissima) nipote di Bishop. Finalmente Blood fuggirà - riuscendo a mostrare la sua nobiltà d'animo anche nella fuga - e comincerà così la sua vita di pirata, tra tesori nascosti, arrembaggi, intrighi politici e duelli all'arma bianca. Sempre a fianco del suo inseparabile amico-bucaniere Levasseur, sempre a rischio di cadere nelle grinfie del vendicativo colonnello Bishop, sempre alla ricerca della sua amata Arabella. E nel frattempo, la sua reputazione di pirata salirà, naturalmente, alle stelle.
