C'è un'idea molto radicata su entrambe le sponde dell'Atlantico: chi lavora sodo e gioca secondo le regole avrà successo e sarà capace di elevarsi fino a raggiungere il limite del proprio talento. È una retorica dell'ascesa, che anche il Partito democratico americano e i partiti della sinistra moderata europea hanno scelto come soluzione ai problemi della globalizzazione, primo fra tutti la disuguaglianza. Se tutti hanno le stesse opportunità, allora chi emergerà grazie ai propri sforzi o alle proprie capacità se lo sarà meritato. Se invece non riuscirà a emergere, la responsabilità sarà soltanto sua. È questo il lato oscuro dell'età del merito. Le élite che pretendono di interpretare la tradizione della sinistra hanno in realtà voltato le spalle a chi dell'élite non fa parte. In una società nella quale l'uguaglianza delle opportunità rimarrà sempre una chimera, il contraccolpo populista degli ultimi anni è stato una rivolta contro la tirannia del merito, che è umiliante e discriminatoria. Da questa ondata populista, dimostra il filosofo Michael Sandel, dobbiamo imparare: non per ripeterne gli slogan xenofobi e nazionalisti, ma per prendere sul serio le richieste legittime che ne sono all'origine. Sandel risponde così alla Brexit, al fenomeno Trump e all'avanzata dell'estrema destra in Europa, offrendo una strategia teorica e politica per ripensare il bene comune.
