Quale concezione della letteratura anima le prodigiose storie di Singer? Quale visione estetica e spirituale ha disegnato i suoi personaggi? Per quanto sorprendente possa risultare, i numerosi saggi cui Singer ha affidato le sue idee in fatto di arte, letteratura e cultura ebraica sono rimasti relegati in pubblicazioni poco accessibili (per lo più il quotidiano yiddish «Forverts») e schermati da pseudonimi. Eppure, come documentano le traduzioni in inglese riaffiorate dai suoi archivi, non v'è dubbio che Singer meditasse di ricavarne una raccolta: questo libro rappresenta dunque la realizzazione postuma di un progetto d'autore - e un'inattesa via d'accesso alla sua filosofia personale. Di più: a mano a mano che ci addentriamo nella lettura, scopriamo che questi interventi - dove lo scrittore è raffigurato come un «intrattenitore», un narratore di destini individuali, ancorato a «un gruppo specifico e a una specifica cultura», refrattario alla psicologia e alla sociologia, perennemente in lotta con «i sommi poteri», cioè con Dio - sono anche l'eco meditativa dei suoi romanzi, e che li illuminano di una luce nuova. Così, allorché Singer schizza con disarmante affabilità un quadro della sua Qabbalah, rivelandoci che le tenebre e il male sono necessari perché le azioni e i pensieri umani «siano in perenne bilico tra ciò che è giusto e ciò che è sbagliato», il destino dei personaggi che abbiamo amato - da Hertz Grein in Ombre sull'Hudson a Yasha Mazur nel Mago di Lublino a Hertz Minsker nel Ciarlatano - ci appare d'improvviso inevitabile. E di un'abbagliante evidenza.
