La Bellezza non è mai stata, nel corso dei secoli, un valore assoluto e atemporale: sia la Bellezza fisica, che la Bellezza divina hanno assunto forme diverse: è stata armonica o dionisiaca, si è associata alla mostruosità nel Medioevo e all'armonia delle sfere celesti nel Rinascimento; ha assunto le forme del "non so che" nel periodo romantico per poi farsi artificio, scherzo, citazione in tutto il Novecento. Partendo da questo presupposto, Umberto Eco ha curato un percorso che non è una semplice storia dell'arte, né una storia dell'estetica, ma si avvale della storia dell'arte e della storia dell'estetica per ripercorrere la storia di un'intera cultura dal punto di vista iconografico e letterario-filosofico.

Really a 3 1/2 star book, but since that's not an option... This book is misnamed, really "dictionary of Beauty" would be a closer title, while "Umberto Eco's Musings on Beauty in a loosely chronological order with occasionaly quotes about beauty from other thinkers and a boatload of pictures" would Leggi tutto
Even if I agree with most of the reproaches this book received (that it is more a guide than a study, that it is more a triumph of compression than of clarity, that it is too eclectic and so on) I have to say I really enjoyed it. Is this a consequence of my great admiration for Umberto Eco or of my a Leggi tutto

It's an interesting topic: what is beauty? It might seem like a trivial question, but think about it: esthetics run through everything we do. Everything we read, watch, listen to, right down to the houses we live in, the cars we drive, the cans we buy food in are made to correspond to some standard
