La sua autrice rimane ancora oggi enigmatica: sorta di scrittrice-antropologa, sul finire dalla vita a metà del Novecento Flora Thompson descrisse la società in cui aveva vissuto da bambina a Juniper Hill (nel romanzo il paese di Lark Rise), sobborgo ai confini tra l'Oxfordshire e il Northamptonshire. Tramite la protagonista, Laura, il lettore si immerge in una ricca ricostruzione immaginaria della realtà rurale inglese alla fine del XIX secolo. L'intreccio che segue la crescita di Laura è sorretto da una scrittura diretta e intensa ed è reso unico dalla presenza di un secondo narratore, il punto di vista dell'autrice adulta, talvolta in contrasto con lo sguardo della bambina. Un'opera unica che ritrae il crepuscolo della società rurale e l'inizio della modernità come la conosciamo.
