Questo volume riunisce mezzo secolo di poesia di una delle voci più significative del secondo Novecento, che con il suo linguaggio esemplare ha influenzato un'intera generazione di poeti americani. Fin dalla plaquette "Dormire con un occhio aperto" (1964), Mark Strand è apparso come un poeta di grande originalità ed eleganza, caratteristiche rimaste immutate nei decenni successivi. Le raccolte della maturità, come La vita ininterrotta (1990), confermano la sua capacità di catturare la sottile musica della coscienza e di creare paesaggi di una fisicità quasi pittorica, emblemi di una condizione interiore: «l'oscuro infinito sentire, / che resisterà e che la terra farà irrigidire / e la notte cosparsa di stelle farà riversare dalle montagne / sui prati sibilanti e sui passi silenziosi». Nei libri più recenti, da "Tormenta al singolare" (1998), che gli valse il Pulitzer, fino agli apologhi sornioni e provocatori di "Quasi invisibile" (2012), Strand mostra uno humour nero che si rivela profonda saggezza e autoironia, dando voce all'immaginario collettivo con una grandiosità e una sincerità senza pari.
