Un giorno, a ventinove anni, Murakami è allo stadio a guardare una partita di baseball quando, osservando la traiettoria della palla finire nel guantone di un giocatore, ha come un'illuminazione: lui, un giorno, diventerà uno scrittore. Tornato a casa, sul tavolo della cucina inizia a scrivere un romanzo e poi un altro ancora: Ascolta la canzone del vento e Flipper, che raccontano la storia di un ragazzo di vent'anni con la voglia sfrenata di scrivere un «romanzo bello». Nel frattempo, però, fuma, beve, pensa alle ragazze con cui in passato ha fatto l'amore. Le cataloga, le evoca. E chiacchiera con un suo amico, ancora più cinico e disilluso di lui, nella convinzione di poter trasformare la realtà con le parole. Ma l'età adulta è li ormai a un passo e il tempo non può fare sconti a nessuno.

These are Murakami’s earliest novels – novellas really as each is only about 100 pages. Both are about the same two young men, an unnamed narrator and his friend and former roommate, ‘The Rat.’ Actually there is a third 'Rat’ book but for some reason it is not included with these two. As always, Murakami's writing is spare & profound. What I especially enjoyed here was his intro essay, "The Birth of My Kitchen Table Fiction," which describes his journey to becoming a great writer.
