La trilogia dell’Enrico VI racconta il lungo e turbolento regno dell’ultimo sovrano della dinastia dei Lancaster, sul trono dal 1422 al 1471. Dopo la vittoria di Enrico V sui francesi ad Agincourt nel 1421, la nazione inglese precipita gradualmente nel caos. Il trionfo dell’anarchia, favorito dalla guerra fratricida tra gli York e i Lancaster, entrambi discendenti dal ceppo dei Plantageneti, culminerà nell’ascesa alla corona dell’anti-re per eccellenza, il satanico e mostruoso Riccardo III. La prima parte dell’Enrico VI rappresenta una sorta di preludio alla Guerra delle due Rose che è al centro delle parti seconda e terza della trilogia, e immette sulla scena personaggi di grande impatto drammaturgico come John Talbot, braccio armato del sovrano, ultimo cavaliere feudale, puro e valoroso, e l’indomita Jeanne d’Arc, la Pulzella d’Orléans, che Shakespeare trasforma in un’amazzone sovversiva e spregiudicata.

My-oh-my. Reading these plays in parallel to a non-fiction book about the Wars of the Roses was definitely a brilliant idea.
