Tagliare la gola a un Hell's Angel in un carcere come San Quentin equivale a una sentenza di morte, e Tim Kearney, un ex eroe di guerra congedato con disonore che si è dedicato al crimine con scarso successo, lo sa perfettamente: non appena uscirà dall'isolamento troveranno il modo di farlo fuori. Poi però la DEA gli fa una proposta: se accetterà di vestire i panni di Bobby Z, un leggendario trafficante di droga di cui si sono perse le tracce, in modo che l'agenzia possa scambiarlo con uno dei loro agenti caduto nelle mani dei narcotrafficanti messicani, poi sarà libero di andarsene e di rifarsi una vita. È come stringere un patto con il diavolo, ma Tim non può rifiutare, e così qualche tempo dopo si ritrova nel lussuoso fortino di un potente signore della droga. Dove, con sua sorpresa, incontra una vecchia fiamma di Bobby Z, Elizabeth, e suo figlio. Don Winslow is my guilty pleasure. Sometimes his books are filled with such ridiculousness that you have to turn the part of your brain off that goes, "really?" and just enjoy the ride. Gracias Don Winslow por rescatarme otra vez. Estupenda novela "policíaca" con todos los ingredientes necesarios para pasar un par de tardes leyendo y en mi caso, animarme a retomar la lectura.

In style, a terrific hearkening to Christopher Brookmyre and Donald Westlake: hilarious & punchy as well as grim, leaning toward the former.
